Theme or complete site template?
Choose a theme when you want to keep control of your existing content types and site architecture. Choose a site template when you want predefined content types, views and page-building patterns as well as the theme. The design is a starting point, not an industry restriction.
Drupal Canvas and compatibility
Canvas lets editors assemble pages from reusable components. Install the appropriate demo and pattern recipes for your theme and chosen page builder; a theme purchase is not a promise that every module is already installed on an existing site. Use the documentation and the requirements in your downloaded release when planning Drupal core, Drupal CMS and Canvas versions.
